THE GHOST OF THELMA TODD

by Jack Blennim
The world of Hollywood today is often filled by actors and actresses who kill the script they have in front of them, talent is in short supply and I doubt if I will ever spend my time wasting effort to go to the pictures! Every one from Australians through to Italian actors and actresses, all think they have the ability to ‘MAKE IT BIG’ in Hollywood!

One of the strangest sightings in Los Angeles concerns the sign for ‘Hollywood’ itself, which is haunted by a number of ghosts. It is the sight of many suicides and one in particular has resulted in numerous sightings ever since.

It was first erected in 1923 and each letter is 45 feet high. It originally read ‘HOLLYWOODLAND’ and was used as a means to sell real estate. In 1945 the local Chamber of Commerce had the last four letters removed for repair and they were never replaced. Since then, Hollywood has come to represent the film industry more than a location.

However, for some, the dream of fame turned into a nightmare. One of the most frequent sightings is that of an actress by the name of Lillian Millicent “Peg” Entwhisle, a 24 year old who threw herself from off the top of the ‘H’ sign in 1932. She took her own life after the failure of her marriage, culminated by poor theatre reviews and further problems when moving to Hollywood for a shot at stardom. In her purse was found a suicide note, that she had rested on top of her coat, which had been neatly folded at the base of the letter ‘H’. She is still seen in the area to this day.

The saddest thing of all about this story is that she died before learning she had in fact just been chosen for the leading role in a Beverly Hills Playhouse Production, ironically the woman in the play commits suicide in the final scene. Frequent sightings of the actress have been seen accompanied by gardenia-scented perfume that was said to have been her favourite. She has also been seen at the bungalow she lived in prior to her death on Beachwood Drive.

A sad tale indeed but also a very ironic one?
