Halloween Costume Safety

Check the label

  •  Make sure the costume is flame retardant.
  •  Colorfast so it won't discolor clothes if it rains.
  •  Does it fit right? Baggy costumes can make kids slip on stairs.
  •  Make sure that costume legs don't drag on the ground.
  •  Wear shoes that fit properly and keep laces tied.
  •  Avoid high-heels and sandals as they are dangerous.
  •  The eye holes in masks don't allow for proper vision.
  •  Remember some people are allergic to rubber masks.
  •  Wigs, hats and beards shouldn't cover eyes or mouth.
  •  For visibility at night, choose light colored costumes.
  •  Trim in reflective tape to keep trick-or-treaters visible and safe.
  •  If your child insist's on dressing all in black, insist on reflective tape.
  •  Use reflective tape to make decorations on sleeves or hems.
  •  Toy swords, pitchforks and other weapons should be flexible.
  •  Realistic-looking guns should never ever be carried.
  •  Be cautious near lit pumpkins and candles with baggy clothing.

  • Always walk from home to home, avoid criss-crossing the street.
  • Always, always, always, accompany small children.
  • Always use the sidewalk, and look both ways before you cross.
  • A flashlight will help you see, and help cars see you.
  • Ask if your hospital offers free x-raying of candy.
  • Avoid cutting across unfamiliar yards or driveways.
  • Carry a cell phone, or enough change to make a phone call.
  • Do not to eat any treats until they are examined by you.
  • Do not to eat unwrapped treats, especially from strangers.
  • Go out during daylight if not accompanied by a an adult.
  • Help plan the route they take and set a return time.
  • Leave emergency info (name, address, phone) inside a pocket.
  • Never enter a stranger's home under any circumstances!
  • Only approach familiar homes with lights on.
