  • glue
  • scissors
paper witch

1.

First you will need to make a broom handle for the witch. You can use a piece of wood if you have it or roll up a rectangle of newspaper and than fasten it with sticky tape.

2.

For the witch's body roll up a bunch of newspaper sheets into a roll until you have a thick cylinder shape. Secure the cylinder with sticky tape so it doesn't unravel. Now attach the cylinder to the stick with tape.

3.

For the arms and legs roll up sheets of news-paper into a roll until you have four thin cylinder shapes. Tape the cylinders with sticky tape to fasten. Attach the cylinders to the body of the witch and secure with sticky tape. Bend to shape the arms and legs and tape in place. Crumple some newspaper sheets and roll into a ball to form the head, and secure the the head to the body with sticky tape.

4.

For the skirt, hat, nose and hat brim you will need to make circles out of cardboard paper or any stiff paper. Use a compass to draw circles for the skirt, hat, nose and hat rim or trace around a round object like a bowl. Later you will need to cut out the smaller circles inside of the hat rim and the skirt and than remove the middle part.

5.

Cut a slit in the circle of paper that you made for the skirt all the way to the center. Now cut the inner circle out on the skirt and remove it. Place this large circle around the waist of your paper witch and secure it with tape.

6.

Now using the circle for the nose, shape the circle so that it forms a long thin cone shape for the nose. Trim off any part that might be uneven. Attach the nose to the head with tape being sure to center it where the face should be on your paper witch.

7.

Cut out the triangle from the hat and twist the circle of paper you made into a cone shape. Measure to see if it fits the head and close it with tape. Trim any uneven edges off. Slip the hat cone into the hat rim from underneath and secure the two together with tape. Tape the hat to the witch's head. Trim any uneven edges and attach the nose to the head.

8.

You need to make the witch sturdy and secure. You do this by paper mache'ing the witch. You need to completely cover the witch with layers of one inch strips of newspaper dipped in glue or paste. You can make your own paste with flour and water if you like. If you use a white glue, water it down about 50%. Do one layer and smooth out out any rough edges with you hand. Let it dry and than do a second layer. Allow to dry completely.

9.

You are now ready to paint your dry witch. Choose the colors you would like best and paint those colors. Be creative! Give her stripped socks and a polka dot dress. The hair was made by gluing on green yarn, but you can also make the hair with small strips of construction paper. Special note: If you are going to hang the witch outdoors, be sure to use enamel paint instead of water colors.
