Making Trowel Creatures

You need:

  •   Garden trowels
  •   Medium and fine sandpaper
  •   Assorted sparkle and acrylic paints
  •   Craft-foam sheets in assorted colors
  •   Orange ribbon for hanging
  •   Wiggly eyes
  •   Pompoms
  •   Faux jewels
  •   Hot-glue gun
  •   Dust cloths
  •   Craft-foam sheets in assorted colors
  •   Small paintbrushes
  •   Clear satin varnish, optional
  • General Directions:

    I.} If rusty, sand the blade & handle than wipe clean.
    2.} Paint 2 coats on both sides and let dry.
    3.} Add details as directed below.

    Jack-O'-Lantern

    1. Paint trowel blade a mix of bright orange & yellow and paint handle green.
    2. Cut triangular 1-inch eyes, 1" x 2"-inch nose and gap-toothed mouth from the yellow foam. Outline with orange-yellow paint and let dry.
    3. Glue eyes, nose and mouth to trowel; glue wiggly eyes to triangles.
    4. Paint zigzag line across top with shiny yellow paint.

    Black Cat:

    1. Paint trowel blade and stem black. Let dry. Place a strip of zigzag-shaped tape around band. Paint top of handle green, bottom orange. Let dry and remove tape.
    2. Paint lime oval eyes, paint round irises green. Press jewel pupils into wet paint.
    3. Draw ear and nose patterns freehand on foam or felt. Cut 2 black ears and 2 pink inner ears and an orange nose.
    4. Cut pipe cleaners in half and curl one end of each piece. Hot-glue the straight ends on each side of blade center for whiskers. Hot-glue nose over whiskers and bottom of ears to back of trowel. Attach inner ears to fronts with tacky glue. Paint ruby glitter mouth.

    Bat:

    1. Paint trowel blade black, paint upper edge and stem yellow, paint a 1- inch-wide green band on handle.- Let dry.
    Place strip of tape on band. Paint handle lavender; let dry. Remove tape.
    2. Draw 2 wings freehand and cut from foam. Glue wings to back of trowel.
    3. Paint ears and tummy orange, eyes lime. Place wiggly eyes into wet paint. Paint red mouth and white teeth. Glue on pompom nose.
    4. Outline ears and tummy and decorate wings with sparkle paint.
