PAPER MACHE |
Jake was nice enough to share his paper mache project with
1halloween.net. Here are directions on how to make your own decorative
paper mache heads that you use for a Halloween disquise. This is the
same procees used that you see on large heads in a parade. This a great
home or school project. On the right you can see the plastic figures
that Jake used as his models. |
To make paper mache mixture:
- 2 cups cornstarch
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup Elmer's Glue
Combine these items in a large container that has a lid so you can close it when not in use. Mix together until smooth and creamy. This is the mixture that you will use to dip strips of newspaper in. |
Jake made the heads using balloons. He layered newspaper dipped
in the mixture on the ballon. Do several layers of the wet newspaper
and than let it dry fully. When dry, he added pieces odf shaped styrofoam
to the form to make the shapes less balloony and more like the characters. |
He then covered those with more paper mache, let it dry and
spray painted the whole head. For the costumes, he searchs discount
bins and thrift stores. He paints directly on the fabric. I often
use hot glue or fabric glue right on the fabric. For the Booberry
costume I built a form out of balloons and I used supermarket starch
to harden the fabric. Then I spray painted it with the light blue.
