Encephalitis Cases

Nicole
My name is Donna and I live in Atlanta, Ga. My niece, Nicole, is 15 and was diagnosed with viral encephalitis last August in Atlanta.

She was a perfectly healthy teen and went into a coma for 3 days after having a severe seizure. The doctors took over 100 tests and never determined what caused it. Since that illness, Nicole has had short-term memory loss and severe personality changes -- paranoia, hostility toward her siblings and outbursts in the class. She is in a special ed class in high school, but continues a troubling tendency, which is vomiting 3-4 times daily. My sister (her mom) has kept a diary of this and there's no rhyme or reason and the doctors don't know if it's tied to the encephalitis. It's very troubling to Nicole and she gets upset when she gets nauseated. Also, this past week she has had mild seizures where she shakes and talks incoherently.

My sister asked me to look on the web for help -- she has given up on doctors -- and I found your website -- what a godsend! I'm giving her the info so she can read stories, gain info and just know she's not alone. If you're interested in a more comprehensive story about Nicole, let me know and I'll OK it with her before sending. It may provide a link to our problem. Thanks and God Bless!
