Encephalitis Cases

Mia
Hello my name is Lisa and I live in port St. Lucie Florida. I would like to share my daughter Mia's story with you.

My oldest daughter Megan was ill for about 6 weeks with mono and herpes sores on her hands face and eyes. Her doctor assured me that my 2 younger children were in no danger of contracting anything from her. When Megan went for a follow up to get medical clearance to go back to school, Mia had a fever so I asked the doctor to check her out. He was pretty sure it was just a virus and would resolve itself.

The next day I went to go wake Mia up and she had vomited in her crib and her fever was 105.5. I took her to a local emergency room and they did blood work, which showed an elevated white cell count of 33,000 so they did a lumbar puncture. Based on the results of these, they initially felt she had meningitis.

She was transferred to a specialized children's hospital 50 miles away. In route to this hospital, Mia suffered a seizure and stopped breathing. They immediately started her on empirical antibiotics and Acyclovir while waiting for the lumbar puncture cultures to grow. She also had an MRI and an EEG and after a few days she was finally diagnosed as having hsv1 meningitis-encephalitis. The doctors said it was a miracle she lived.

All of this happened in December 2006 when Mia was 7 months old. Thank god she is now a very happy and beautiful girl. She is severely delayed and cannot walk or talk yet. We have no idea what other issues are going to occur as she grows up but I am very fortunate to have her. I would love to hear anyone else's story too. So I thank you for listening to mine and if you would like to contact me feel free. My name is Lisa and you can email at the link below.
