Hi, I live in Mt. Waverley Victoria Australia my daughter Kyra aged 9 caught
encephalitis enterovirus in the year 2007, Kyra had a grand mal seizure
while at her fathers over the school holidays. We are not together and he
rang me asking me if Kyra was epileptic? Kyra had never had a seizure before
that. Kyra ended up in hospital and I stayed with her for two weeks in a
isolated room. In that time Kyra had hallucinations and was screaming seeing
bugs and spiders which were coming after her. It was so upsetting to see
my little girl in this pain. There were complaints of massive headaches
and vomiting no one at the hospital knew what was causing this. They asked
me so many questions.
They did a lumbar puncture and sent her home. Well of course once the medicine
wore off seizures started, Kyra ate pasta that day and it was stuck in her
throat. I am first aid trained so I placed her in the recovery position
and I rang the ambulance and we were in hospital once again they found out
by contacting the other hospital that it was Encephalitis. Well since then
we have tried three medications and so far nothing stops the seizures, especially
when Kyra has a cold or gastro bugs. I can not work and now care for her
as Kyra has had around 100 seizures so far, varying from Absent to Grand
Mal or Partial. Just when you think Kyra is ok a seizure happens. Some people
do not even know what a seizure is so this makes it hard for kyra to play
at some friends places.
All parents in my view should to be first aid trained. I hate explaining to people
who stare blankly or do not understand like its contagious or something.
Its difficult when Kyra vomits up her medicine also as you know she is going
to have more seizures. It has happened out the front of the school, in safeway's,
on the street and on nature strips of homes, sometimes if I am out I go
to a shop to lay her in the recovery position. It is difficult as you think
Kyra is ok once rested for three days, I am unsure now of when they are
going to happen. Kyra tells me she is going to have one and explains it
to me like a feeling like she is going to die but you only have seconds
to get her to the ground as she drops.
I am upset at people who do not understand and tell Kyra that she can die from
having a seizure. Also teachers who ring you to come and collect her after
a absent seizure. Kyra could lie in the sick bay to sleep for 30mins to
1 hour and return to class if its a mild seizure given panadol. Last year
Kyra was left sitting while seizing and was turning blue I was told by her
teacher. I had a chat with this idiot of a teacher and was told by her that
teaching was her priority. It is so upsetting for Kyra and no signs of getting
better. Kyra is taking 11mls of Epilim and 50mgs of Lamictal morning and
night. At present I am starting to buy school class books so I can help
Kyra catch up as her Maths is at grade 2 level and she is in grade 4. Memory
is a problem some days and being tired is another also stomach ache and
headache. I hope we find the correct medication. I love Kyra so much and
would like any body to email me back to chat that lives with someone with
similair issues.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Janine Kyra's mum.
