My name is Abbie I'm from New Orleans, Louisiana. When my son Kyle was 9 months old (May 2004) he became ill, I was told it was just a stomach virus. After 2 days he was better, in a matter of minutes he went from crawling around on the floor to lifeless in my arms. I rushed him to the hospital where every test imaginable was performed he was put in the ICU for 6 days then we were moved to the floor where we stayed for 2 whole months. They continued to do test after test, they had no idea what he had.
Before he was a perfectly normal child about to walk and then, he couldn't hold his head up and he stayed curled in a ball when he wasn't given medication to sleep he was crying. he couldn't control and part of his body he had to be fed with a tube up his nose.
We were released from the hospital after a tube was put in his stomach for him to be fed he was still undiagnosed. Our first appointment back to the neurologist we were told a test came back and they called it "Rota Encephalitis" and that's all we know.
We have been home for 5 months, Kyle receives therapy 5 times a week, physical twice, speech, occupational, and special instruction. He is now starting to eat small quantities by mouth, he still struggles to hold his head up for short periods of time he also is now flipping himself over but has little control over his arms and upper body. He is getting better but real slowly it's hard sometimes to see other peoples kids run and play but my baby can't. Thank You
Abbie
