Encephalitis Cases

Julia
My daughter Julia was going to be 8 years old in March of 1999. A week before her birthday she complained of a stomachache and headache. The Doctor said she had a stomach virus and that she would be better after 2 weeks. When a week passed we went back. He did a blood test, her white cells were high, and she was put on antibiotics. Two days later she was worse: lethargic, drowsy, and achy. She complained in the morning of having difficulty urinating. I sent her to school, but her baby sitter had to pick her up she could not make it through the day. That Friday I took her to the doctor again, he could not find anything wrong because her neck was not stiff so it was not meningitis. When she got off the examining table she said she was seeing double. The doctor sent us to the emergency room for a CAT scan. That night the CAT scan was normal, they did a spinal tap, it was meningitis!! It was viral meningitis. She developed a fever, and couldn't go to the bathroom at all. After 1 week in the hospital my baby was worse than the first day. Little by little she lost muscle control, her neck got stiff, and her eyes crossed. The doctor said the swelling got into the brain and she had encephalitis.

She was not responding to anything and getting worse. We all felt so helpless, there was nothing the doctor could do. We prayed, it was in God's hands. After 29 days in the hospital she was released with no fever. She was in a wheel chair, she could hold her head up, stand, sit, crawl, and other things. After a week at home she had improved a lot.... she went back to school and finish her school year, it was a miracle!!!

The doctor had never seen such a recovery. My baby is doing great. She is a new Julia, more sensitive, lacks concentration, childish, easily distracted, has temper tantrums, and much more. But she is my miracle child, I thanks God everyday I have her!!!

At this moment we are following up with the Neurologist, she had some issues with math in school, and had some of the things mentioned above. The EEG showed slow brain waves. She shows signs of ADD; maybe we will start her on medication in the fall. Does this will ever end??

What will the future hold as a result of this disease??? Only time will tell! I would like to hear from anybody with any comments.
