Encephalitis Cases

Isaac
My name is Layne and my middle son, Isaac, contracted unknown viral encephalitis in November 2003. He was 4 weeks old. My story is similar to many of those already posted. He became ill with a fever and due to his young age we were instructed to take him to Children’s Hospital. At first they thought he had meningitis but then he began to have seizures and they changed the diagnosis to meningitis/encephalitis. They were unsure if he would live. They thought it was from herpes but all of his tests were negative. He was in the PICU for a week and on the neurology floor for 3 days. He is now 2. He has only had one seizure since that time due to a fever. He is not on any meds.

He is doing wonderfully. He is slightly delayed in all areas of development but considering the prognosis we were given originally we are very happy with his progress. He can walk and run and jump. He talks in single words and uses about 50 words. He is starting to put two words together. He is happy and thriving. I read many of these stories when we returned home from the hospital and only wanted to find stories where the parents reported there were no delays. I was so fearful for our future. I have a much different perspective now. Even if he had more severe delays, it wouldn’t matter. Nothing can change the love you feel for your child, in fact, the experience of almost losing a child makes you treasure them even more. For those of you facing this illness at this time, keep hope and love alive. Don’t worry about the future, just love your child and take care of yourself.
