Encephalitis Cases

Emily
Emily was 6 and 1/2 months old when she got Herpes Simplex Encephalitis.

At first the doctors thought it was just a stomach virus. And to this day there was only one test that suggested Herpes Simplex Encephalitis. Emily went into the hospital 9 days after receiving her DPT and polio vaccination. I am still wondering if that was the cause. Emily's stay in the hospital was 7 weeks. She spent at least 4 weeks in PICU. Countless number of sleepless nights because her apnea was so bad.

We were in the hospital for 3 weeks before there was any brain damage. The neurologist at the time told me he looked for Emily to sleep the rest of her life. So far she has proved him wrong.

Emily still has a long way to go and she is severely disabled but has made some progress. Emily has cortical visual impairment, is g-tube fed, has a seizure disorder, is on ketogenic diet, cognitively delayed, DAFO's, has hand splints and uses a wheel chair. She receives Physical, Occupational, Speech and Vision therapy at least 2 times a week.

It is with deepest regrets that I inform you that Emma passed away on September 27, 2001 from respiratory failure 2 days after having surgery.
