Encephalitis Cases

Cal
Cal was born Jan. 2002 a healthy beautiful strong little boy, but at 2 weeks old Cal came down with a low grade fever and was taken to a local family practitioner for a check. We were told it was probably just a sore throat and sent home, but 24 hours later he was seizing and had an uncontrollable fever. We rushed him to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital where he was diagnosed with HSV Encephalitis and started on acyclovir. I could write pages about the nightmare that ensued since that time but that's all past and we are on that steep road of recovery now.

Cal has global and developmental delays, visual deficiencies, sensory defensiveness, no mobility or speech; even with all the problems that he has I still feel so fortunate that he has no feeding tube and I have been able to teach him to eat from a bottle as well as the fact that he has remained seizure free for a year now.

I am one of those people who have come to understand that there are no coincidences in life and even the more tragic events can be bountiful blessings in disguise. This child has changed so many lives and hearts already and he's only 18 months old. He has shown me the true meaning of life and love and I only look forward to the [maybe not so easy] journey ahead.

If we can be of help to anyone feel free to contact me.
