Hi, my name is Delvina and this story is about my son Ammareon. Ammareon
was 1 yr at the time he con-tracted encephalitis. He went to the doctor
and received his 1 year immunization shots and after that about a week later
everything went downhill from there. He was unresponsive, he would roll
his eyes in the back of his head, he wouldn't eat and he would only be awake
for about 10 minutes out of the day in a 24 hour period.
I took Ammareon to Children's hospital and they told me that he might have a virus
and that I should go home and give him some Tylenol. I was very unhappy
with that because they always say that your child has some kind of virus
without really looking into detail of the symptoms. Then I took him to a
different hospital and they said the same thing with the added dehydration
so they put in an IV and he stayed there for about 8 hours.
There were no changes in Ammareon and he had this fever that wouldn't break so I took him to his regular doctor and that is when he said something wasn't right with Ammareon. He had no reflexes, he was unresponsive, and he was limp like a rag doll. They did blood work and during the time when they were sticking the needles into Ammareon's arm he did not even budge. Then that is when he sent me over to Children's hospital and Ammareon was admitted and stayed for two weeks. About two days into his stay the doctor told me that it was good that i brought him in when I did because he was slipping into a coma and that he was having brain seizures. Ammareon was paralyzed on the left side of his body, he forgot how to eat, walk, and talk. He was being tube fed and he received services in the hospital.
Ammareon can eat and walk now, but he still cannot talk. He worked with Penfield for 2 years and his progress is not all that great. It's like nothing can help my baby. Ammareon is always injuring himself because he doesn't know dangerous from not dangerous. He stays up all night until 2,3,4 or sometimes
5 o' clock in the morning banging on things, riding his bike through the house, destroying the house and all sorts of things. Ammareon is super active.
He went past hyper active a long time ago. Ammareon just recently knocked a mirror over on himself and it required him to get 40+ stitches in his
legs and some in his hand. I don't know what to do, I am at my wits end. Last year he burned himself, this year he cut himself and I am terrified
of what will happen next. The doctor said that he believe that his frontal lobe of his brain was damaged when he was seizing and that he doesn't understand
what can and can't hurt him. He has the mind of a two year old and he will be 4 in May 2006.
I am so confused. I really need help. I don't have a happy ending to my story because I am still going through the effects of what encephalitis
has done to my child. I live with the results day by day and it is very hard for me. I just prey that my son will return to normal and live a normal
life like his siblings and every other child his age. Thank you for taking the time to read my story and I am glad to have shared it with you. May
God Bless. Thank You
