On the way home, I had stopped to get the prescriptions filled. When I came
back out to the car, Amanda was talking and not making any sense. I called
the doctor and he said to get her to the emergency room. We rushed her to
Kosair Children's Hospital ER in Louisville, KY. Upon arriving, in about
10 minutes, she had a seizure. A CT scan revealed brain swelling, but they
did not know why. She tested positive for mono. She was admitted to ICU,
and after several more tests, they concluded it was herpes Encephalitis.
By the week-end, Amanda was transferred out to the floor because she was doing
so well. On Tuesday, Amanda regressed, could not swallow and slept all the
time. A CT scan revealed a lot more swelling, and she underwent a craniotomy
to relieve the pressure.
Amanda started recovering for about 3 weeks. Then she began to regress
again. She kept her eyes closed and yelled continually. Our neurologist,
a wonderful doctor, did research and found she had ADEM. He administered
IVIG and mega doees of steroids. She immediately made a huge turn-around
and has continued to recover ever since. She came home from the hospital
on 06-23-04.
Amanda has some trouble with short-term memory, but that is improving greatly.
You can see big changes every week. Her short-term memory is beginning to
store things into her long-term memory. We have bought several memory-type
games for her, like Simon. And she also plays memory games on the internet.
We're just praising God that she's come so far, and we're believing she
is going to continue to recover and be back like her old self. She always
was a sweet and precious girl, and now she's even sweeter!
