Encephalitis Cases

Zayna
My name is Glenda, and this is my daughter Zayna's story. Zayna is 22 years old and contracted HSE in August of 2001 at the age of 19.

Zayna woke up on August 3 feeling ill, and vomiting. Normally, she would have preferred to tough it out, but being 7 months pregnant, she felt she should at least have it checked out at the local hospital in Niagara Falls, Ontario. There, she was admitted under the assumption that she had heat exhaustion. By the second day, Zayna was becoming psychotic, and the hospital, unsure of what they were dealing with, had her transferred by ambulance to the university hospital in Hamilton Ontario.

August 5, my daughter lay in a coma. She stayed in the Hamilton hospital for 2 weeks, then was transferred to St.Catharines Ontario for another 2 weeks.

By now, we knew that what we were dealing with had forever changed my daughter's life. Already accepted to go to university in the fall, she couldn't even read or write at this point. Her desire to eventually work with disabled children had now become the impossible dream.

Update:
A couple of years ago I submitted the above about my daughter , Zayna. Since then, the news has only been good. With the help of speech therapists, and tutors, her reading and writing is just about where it should be. She is also attending college on a part-time basis. I guess the only way I can put it is that, that day in August, 2001 the daughter I had known ceased to be and the woman who rose up in her place is more wonderful, and more amazing than I could have ever hoped for. Zayna is also ready and wants to receive her own e-mails at
