I had a case of the mumps in the summer of '69, and as I recall, got much sicker, to the
point that our family doctor made a house call and sent me to the hospital.
I remember being very sick, but I can't remember many details, other than a very bad
headache. I guess I was lucky, because the doctors at the hospital in our small town
diagnosed encephalitis with a spinal tap. I don't remember other tests. I believe they made
a pretty quick diagnosis. I just remember being very sick. I do remember that I was so sick,
the spinal tap didn't faze me. I've been told by many people that it's painful. At the time,
it didn't seem to bother me. I remember later my mother saying the doctors were worried that
I might not make it.
As for lasting side effects, the only thing that may apply to me is possibly short term
memory problems, and that may not even be related. I submitted my story because I remember
that mine was diagnosed fairly quickly, which in retrospect is surprising, given the
technology available in a small town in 1969.
