Hi, My name is Pamela Lee. On 22 April, 1982, I caught the flu from a co-worker
who had taken the flu shot. I was ill for 2 weeks, and then the flu got
tired of 'just' making my body sick, it attacked my brain. The doctors in
Frankfurt, FRG, USARMY Hospital, said I had, 'Post-Infectious Encephalitis'
and after I learned to pronounce it, I started learning what it meant. I
figured it was just a long word in Doctors language for ‘I don’t know’.
I was retired from the military, and slipped thru the cracks when getting rehab.
They all refusedd to admit that I might need some assistance. I could no
longer do what I was trained to do. I went back to college and flunked out
in only two semesters. Before, I had a 3.75 GPA. How was I supposed to feel
good about myself when I had been forcibly retired at age 26, flunked out
of college, had to send my 12 year old to another member of my family to
raise, and couldn't’t qualify for a ‘real job’ anywhere? I moved in with
my baby brother. He was very gracious about allowing me and my son to do
this. I am grateful for this. Really. It is just that our adult lives matched
up about as much as our childhood lives did.
Anyway, I got bored so I actually went to work (as a diversion) as a security
guard in a mall. After six months or so, I asked them to fire me. I worked
in the mall’s movie theater as a cashier. That job did not last up to the
end of the 2 week probation. Next job I had was at a locally owned convenience
store, and for some reason, they up-graded my position from clerk to manager.
That lasted a month or two. Oh, well, life does seem to go along even when
I did not particularly want it to much less know where I wanted to go. I
worked for the census bureau, the USPS.
Now I am working at a job with a non-profit company that I’ve had for over 10
years. Next week I go to see a doctor to see if I have been working too
hard at some-thing I am getting tired of or if I need to slow down a bit.
Life goes on, and you might as well like it that way, ‘cause it’s going.
