My younger brother got a viral attack when he was a baby 1 year old. After normal medication he was perfectly normal. At the age of 1.5 years he was as intelligent, healthy & normal as any other kids of this age are. However, he got another attack this time damaging the left side of his brain. This being a permanent damage he could never develop any logic, speech and all other functions covered by the left brain. Also his right leg & right hand were damaged forever. He could not even stand then.
Over the years a lot of physiotherapy and simple care brought him to a level where he can walk, understand extremely elementary things (like a 1 year old), and eat proper food. Today he is 34 years of age still depending on us. We wake him, take him for a walk, feed him, get his cleaning done, clothe him and so on. Phsically he maintains good health. Occasionally he gets mild "fits" lasting only a few seconds. However this is dangerous since
he can fall down while walking or climbing down stairs. As per the physian's advice there is no medical solution developed. He is kept on tranquilizers to subside fits i.e. about 10 mg of gardinal a day.The hardest fact is that we have to attend to him the whole day. We cannot understand even his basic needs, how he feels etc since he cannot express himself.
Are there similar cases across the world? How do we care for these type of patients? What complications could arise as he grows old? These are some questions that concern us. Please share some of your experiences and views or any developments in science which could help us.
Best Regards,
