Hi my name is Marie and I contracted Hashimoto's Encephalitis
in Feb. 2006. I started feeling very tired, but not been able
to sleep then I became a bit clumsy but as I was just back from
holiday I put it down to being out of routine. From Friday the
25 my daughter noticed my speech getting slurred and that my
train of thought would wander in the middle of a conversation.
When my daughter rang again on Monday she thought I had taken a stroke as my speech
had got worse. I was taken to my local G.P. (with a bit of a
struggle) by my son and husband. My G.P. sent me straight to
the hospital after some tests which showed my balance was way
off. By the time my daughter arrived home on the Tues I was
like a crazed woman the poor nurses got the brunt of it.
At first the doctors could not tell what was wrong, all brain scans and
lumber tests came back clear but I was getting worse. I was
then put on a drip with antibiotics and steroids, after 5 days
my children started to see my old self coming back. I got home
after 2 weeks with a bag full of tablets which I hated taking.
In april I took a bit of a relapse and was moved to Cork hospital
under the care of Mr. Sweeney who has given me back my life.
It has been a long road for me and my family. I cant eat much as my taste buds don't seem to work but its a small price to pay.
