Hi. My name is Mariann and I was diagnosed with Herpes Viral Encephalitis
when I was 34 years old. That was in April 1992. I had a series of Bronchitis
that were not responding to anti-biotic's and steroid shots. Then I came
down with Viral Pneumonia. This was not unusual for me as I had respiratory
infections before. There the pneumonia was diagnosed and I was complaining
of terrible headaches, but I thought the fatigue was just pneumonia.
The test showed that I had HSE. A SPECT scan showed the parts of the brain that
were not getting enough blood. I went into a light coma for several weeks
and had a stroke during this time.
Now I have seizures, garbled hearing, fatigue, bi-polar disorder, balance problems,
and some bladder problems.
Over the years, some residuals come and go, I cannot drive or work now because
of the seizures and a com-promised immune system. Now I live in Mississippi
on the coast in a very quite area, with my husband and my pets. I have two
grown married sons and a grandchild.
I am 47 now, and have been hospitalized for this or that infection and seizures
several times. I have survived this for 12 years. Most likely I will continue
to live with the residuals and the battle with them for the rest of my life.
My family is very supportive now, but at the beginning they were just waiting
for it to go away like a flu. My HSE and residuals are chronic. The encephalitis
reoccurs as meningitis sometimes, or other brain problems or in-fections.
I don’t know if I still have HSE, but every few years I have some type of
another brain infection and have a good neurologist and a good husband who
keep me going. I enjoy writing, and a much quieter life style now, that
is adapting around my Encephalitis and residuals.
