Lou
My husband got Encephalitis the Thursday before father's day, in June of 2000. I came home from work to find him laying on the bed, sort of half way on. He said he didn't make supper because he couldn't find the potatoes, and no coffee because he couldn't find the filters. I knew something was wrong so I said he should take his blood sugar because I was afraid his diabetes was out of whack. It was sky high! I was afraid he may go into a coma from that. I wasn't sure what to do about it so I said "we should go to the hospital." He was very disoriented by this time and had a hard time getting into the car.

At the hospital he kept deteriorating. The doctor that was there was afraid, I think because my husband was getting worse by the minute. To make a long story short, he got so bad he didn't know me. They sent him for all kinds of tests, and started him on acyclovir. I am so glad we got the right medical attention so fast. I thank God for guiding the doctors that night! He lost a few days, but by Sunday I knew he was going to be ok. Best Father's Day ever! In the hospital, but the kids and grand kids were there and he was BACK! About 3 weeks later he got very ill. We thought it was the flu, vomiting and diarrhea. Started on Sunday and by Thursday it was blood, so off to hospital again. More tests and a bone scan because in May of 2000 he had a lamanectomy (operation on his neck, where theytook away part of the vertebrae). They put a scope down to see if he had an ulcer. "No" they said, just a very raw esophagus. More meds for that and was in hospital for 11 days that time. He also had pneumonia. Went to see the doctor on Wednesday of that week to see how the last x-rays were. Good news, pneumonia was gone from that lung, bad news it is in the other lung. So more meds.

I don't know if this is anything to do with the E or not. I am afraid to go to work and leave him at home alone, but someone has to work here. He was a truck driver most of his life, so led a very active life. Now he is so weak, and tired all the time. He lost a pile of weight.

I am afraid, and I didn't know that after you had E it hangs around to remind you. My heart aches for all of you. I am having a very hard time with this.
