We have recently gone through months of a living nightmare. Our 19 year old son is recovering from encephalitis. It started out with him being tired all the time. Then he started having pains in his back and upper neck. This went on for a while. The doctor told our son to go home and rest and eat healthy and to read a good book then they sent him to a PT.
During this time we had no clue what was wrong with him. His condition worsened. He started seeing double and triple vision. We started taking him to the ER, but they were to busy to actually treat him. During his visits to the ER they would put him on IV's and after what they considered was treatment they would tell us to take him home and tell us that if he did not feel better the next day to bring him back.
On the third visit to the ER our son started throwing up blood. This was happening during his visit to the ER. They told us that he had Mononucleosis, (even though he was not displaying any of the symptoms for this viruses).
After they released him we took him back home and the next day he had a Gran Mal Seizure. Our son went into a coma. During this time in the hospital they decided to run CT scans and a MRI. They now stated that he had Encephalitis. After two days of being in a coma, our son slowly started to come around. They released him three days later without any type of evaluation. Of course at this time we did not know much about what or how encephalitis was going to affect our son's brain.
Since this time we have been reading any and every thing that we can get our hands on.
I think back and I cannot believe how our son was treated. How could they not see the
signs? Of course the family doctor says he is sorry, but that just doesn't cut it. I
just can't believe what happened at the ER. We are very fortunate, our son only lost his
short term memory, and jumps back to his childhood days, but we have our son and that
is the most important thing.
"Is this the normal treatment for encephalitis?"
It seemed like nobody wanted to help us. We want to tell the community so that this does
not happen to another family. Do you have any advise you can share?
