Hi, I am an Encephalitis survivor. I had Viral Encephalitis when I was 3 years old, I am now 46. I happened to stumble
across this group quite by accident. I was actually looking up sleep apnea, when I found a
correlation between central sleep apnea & encephalitis.
I have had an ongoing problem with night sweats. I have every test imaginable to see why
I wake up every night totally soaked. This has been an exhausting thing for at least the last 5
years. According to the sleep experts there are two kinds of apnea, obstructive(usually caused by
anatomy)and central apnea(caused by brain stem malofunction) ex.encephalitis, or other diseases. With
Central apnea, your brain forgets to tell you to breath, so instead of your throat closing , (as in
obstructive apnea) your chest doesn't rise & fall. Hummm, I wonder if this would cause me to
wake up be short of breath & SWEAT! Well then I went poking around the net and found you guys so
that's how I ended up here.
Well, I am so glad to find this group. I thought I was really losing it until now. I have been
suffering from memory loss which is progressing (thought I was ageing kinda soon).I get
angry & upset very easily(always did, was even labeled as bladder eyes as a child). I talked to
my mom about my disease yesterday, she says it was caused from a mosquito, that bit a horse,
then me or viceversa. I went into convulsions then ended up in the hospital. The neuroligist
told my mom he had only a small paragraph on encephalitis in his books, and that I was only
the second case known, and that he did not know how to treat me. They said serveral times that
I would probabally die, or at the very least have severe mental problems.
For a few years post enceph I would shake (have fits) and temporary paralysis, occasionally. I did have one incident when I was in my 20's when my legs
totally went out on me for about 15 minutes. But other than that I seem ok. However, I know something is wrong with my memory, I had no idea until
now that this could be a side effect. I also seem to jumble my words, just can't get it out right sometimes. It's FRUSTRATING as hell! It's getting
worse, I forget things that I have said 30 minutes ago. And of course the Night Sweats, horrible happens every night up to 6 times a night. I thought
until, recently that the sweats woke me up, however, I have noticed I wake up, then sweat. I'm going to ask my doc for a sleep study. Do any of you follow up with a neurologist? I hope to find a doc knowlegable in encephalitis.
I know I sound like a babbling idiot, but I feel as though I found a long lost friend.
