My name is Heather. I contracted encephalitis in 1968 at 9 months
old. The doctors called it focal encephalitis cause only part
of my brain swelled. It was caused by a mosquito.
I now live in Hamilton, Ohio, but I was visiting my grandparents
in Florida when it happened. I don't know too much about what
happened. But my mom told me that I had a fever of 106, and
that it lasted for 12 days. The doctors had to strap me to a
bed of ice with a tent over me and air tubes pumping cold air
thru them.
The prognosis that my parents received was that I would probably
have severe brain damage. I fooled them. I only have nerve damage
to the right side of my face. I look like I have bells palsy
all the time, I have complete feeling, only lack of muscle control.
The only other problem that I have is if I get any kind of a
fever or illness the right side of my face swells a bit and
becomes kind of numb. I just want people to know that there
is a light at the end of the tunnel. And that there is hope!
