My name is Dianne. When my husband Fred, age 63, came home Oct 27th
2000, he was fevered, had a headache & felt nauseous. He went to bed and
slept almost all weekend, which is what he has always done when feeling poorly.
On Sun he started hiccupping. On Monday, he said felt like his heart was racing.
He was still hiccupping, and his fingertips were a little blue, so we took him to em
ergency. We came home, three hours later, and all tests showed nothing. Thirty
minutes later, Fred had a seizure, and had two more before getting back to hospital
by ambulance. He was unconscious, not breathing and combative. With a breathing
tube in, he was in a coma about 30 hours, but was moving limbs very well all the time.
They did CAT scan, nuclear brain scan & lumbar puncture but were fairly certain by
then he had encephalitis. Was put on standard 3-week course of viral medication,
Dilantin for seizures. He was awake and talking but not really knowing what was going
on until about a week later when seemed to wake up again and realize where he was.
They kept him in for the three weeks; he came home November 22nd.
He ran his own moving company, he had been thinking about slowing down & letting his
son take over, but now that he cannot work, is very frustrated as he can't drive & has to rely on
myself to drive him. He was a very independent man, didn't like to impose on anyone. Now feels
that's is all he's doing. Headaches all the time, very fatigued, short
term memory loss, emotional, & feels like his world is falling apart, which it has but I feel we have to
take one day at a time. We are trying to help him cope but we don't know much about encephalitis,
although we have learned quite a bit from the ESG, but as said everyone is different & what works
for one won't for another. One of our daughters thinks he's getting depressed & she's probably
right but we're not much for drugs & if they made him more sluggish then he is he'll be more upset.
Does anyone know of any herbals that would help? Thank you for letting me ramble on.
