My story is about my younger sister. In December 2000 we had our gps (doctor) out five times because she (Donna) had been getting really ill over a period of ten days starting with her being sick. This went on, to not knowing who we were and where she was. In the end I called the nhs line because I knew something was seriously wrong.
The ambulance arrived and I knew by the look on their faces Donna was in seriously ill. When we got to the hospital, she was taken in to A/E. Four hours later they were still unsure what the problem was. The next 24 hours Donna went down hill. She then went on to ITU on to a ventilator and went into a coma. We were told they suspected viral encephalitis we were told that she was critical. This was Christmas Eve; even now still brings a lump to my throat.
The next eleven days were spent in the ITU watching my little sister fight for her life. After eleven days she went up to the high dependency ward for a few days, till a bed on a neurology ward could be found. Donna came into the Queens Medical Centre on the 23/12/00 and came out on 26/03/01.
Every day tasks we take for granted, were an up hill struggle for Donna, but all I say is, you
were so close to the thin line between life and death that what ever is thrown at you is
better than not being here.
I have always loved her very much and I am so pleased we didn't lose her.
