It was June 2001 just before my 21st birthday when it finally came to a head, I had being feeling unwell for quite some time, extreme tiredness ,
headaches etc. I would have to leave work and college several times to go to bed yet no one could find anything wrong with me. That was until one
Sunday morning when my parents returned home from mass to find me in my underwear at the end of our garden seeking shade from the heat I was feeling
inside me. This and most of the following 2 weeks was and still is a blur to me. I was rushed to a nearby hospital which came to the conclusion it
was most likely a drugs overdose as I was showing signs of being possessed by the devil, it taking numerous doctors and nurses to hold me down. I
had to be transferred to a hospital 2 hours away in cork as my local hospital at the time could not provide CAT scan facilities at the weekend. I
underwent some spinal tap's and cat scans along with endless tests whilst in intensive care in a coma state, until I finally came back to the land
of the living some 10 days later. I don't remember any of this but it was an extremely traumatic time for my family. I tried to go back to my old
life as quickly as possible but found myself unable to return to my previous happy go lucky self as I was terrified of this disease that had come
from nowhere and had nearly killed me would return for a second bite of the cherry. This feeling has never totally left me as I could never understand
why I was chosen and have never really know what exactly happened me. But thanks to a great family and fiancé I have 99% of my old self back and having
read the stories of other survivors which are nearly identical to mine I do feel so much better!
