Denise
My name is Denise. On December 21, 1992, at the age of 41 I was diagnosed with Herpes Simplex Encephalitis. I live in a small town in Ohio.

I went to work thinking I had the flue. I had to get payroll ready before Christmas and didn't want to delay it. I left work early that day (feeling ill) and went home and to bed. I called my doctor but he was away and I didn't want to go anywhere else. I slept for the next two days.

On Wednesday evening my sister and a friend talked me into going to Aultman Hospital in Canton, OH. I think it was very early Thursday morning before I was admitted. I don't remember anything else until Thursday afternoon (Christmas Eve) my brother and his wife were in my room. I tried to talk to them but couldn't. My brother handed my a pen and paper but I couldn't write. My brother told me later that as they were headed to the elevator they heard a nurse call for help in my room. I had went into seizures. I was transferred into MICU.

I was on life support system because of the illness. I don't remember anything else until I was transferred into a regular room five days later. When my regular doctor came in, I didn't know his name but I recognized him. I don't even remember the neurologist that was called in but I am very thankful that he knew what to do. I was in the hospital until January 3, 1993.

I had to return to the hospital, in a step down unit, about 10 days later because of blood clots in my lung and leg. I was in for about a month but that time did help me.

It's been 8 years and I still have trouble with spelling and coming up with the right words when I'm talking. I can sometimes come up with an initial but not with a name. About four years ago I got my medical records from the hospital. Reading them has helped explain some things.

Reading the stories from others who have gone through similar times has really helped me too. I know a lot of prayers were said for me during the time of my sickness and they were truly answered.
