Hi my name is Deborah,
I got Encephalitis
in October 2009 when I was 46 but have not had a definitive diagnosis,
probably ADEM or Brainstem. I live in England.
Initially my left hand and face went numb and I was really tired.
After about two weeks the numbness spread to all of my left side and
I was referred to a neurologist where an MRI revealed inflammation
of the mid brain / brain stem. Over the next two weeks I began to
stagger, drag my left foot, walk into walls and have trouble with
my speech. My vision deteriorated so I could no longer drive. I was
admitted to hospital for IV steroid treatment but got progressively
worse, developing double vision and being unable to walk. I also found
I cried or laughed for no reason. Hysterical laughter was really embarrassing,
I just couldn't stop.
I remained in hospital for 3 weeks and had about 8 MRI's, CT scan,
loads of blood tests and lumbar puncture. The only thing that was
shown was the brain inflammation. I was due to have a brain biopsy
but luckily began to recover before this happened. After 6 months
the double vision subsided and I am left with numb fingers in left
hand and a frequent sudden loss of muscle tone causing inability to
move or speak (Cataplexy). This has decreased from every 2 minutes
to every 30 min's. I still get extremely fatigued and stressed really
easily. Still off work but there is hope for full recovery.
