Wow! I accidenly came upon this site and was amazed by all the stories, that I had to submit my own. I never had Encephalitis, but my mom did when
I was about nine years old (I'm eighteen now). She was about 44 years old and she had viral encephalitis.
At first she just started having really bad headaches but she still went to work and tried
to get over them. They just kept getting worse and worse though until she
felt like she was going to pass out. The she starting vomiting and eventually
became bed ridden. It was assumed by us all that she just had a really bad
case of the flu. I think she was also losing consciouness at this time too,
but since she was so out of, she didn't even relaize what was going on. Then
she started forgetting simple things, like names of my friends. At first
I thought she was joking (I don't know why I thought that) but then she soon
forgot my name. I knew it was serious, but I being young just didnt understand.
Eventually while I was in school, my dad rushed her to the hospital after
realizing she was barely conscious and couldnt remember a thing. When she
was signing in to get checked on she couldnt even remember her own name...the
reason we hadn't taken her to the hospital was because she refused to go,
but finally my dad forced her to go because he was so worried. The doctors
said if he hadn't taken her in that day she would probaly have died.
She spent a really long time in the hospital and I wasn't even allowed to see
her because she was in such bad shape. I didn't even know until much later
that she almost died. Luckily though she overcame the disease but she never
did make a full recovery. To this day she has problems remembering names
and places. She also suffers from clinical depression, which doctors think
might be an after affect of the disease. Her personality also changed after
the disease, she became a new person, like she used new phrases and acted
differently. But she is still in good shape and I am so happy she was strong
enough to live through it!
