My wife contracted Herpes Simplex Virus
Encephalitis in March 2008 and possibly because of delayed diagnosis
& treatment she has not made a recovery where she can look after herself.
She went to hospital suffering from seizures and a high temperature on Saturday Morning (she was a known epileptic but had not had a fit for 18 months)
It was the Easter Weekend and since reviewing her notes it has come to light there are no notes of a doctor seeing her on the Easter Sunday or Bank Holiday Monday.
On one early morning when instructed by the Neurology hospital that she should have two drugs. The Nurse looking after her could not give her one drug as it required a Doctor to insert a central line and from 3am to 8am she could not get a reply from a Doctor then passed the matter over to the Sister to sort out and in the Nurses words “as a result the patient didn't have her medication as prescribed”
On Tuesday at 4 pm ish she was finally taken to have a CT scan but by this time she was paralysed on her right side. They then discovered there was a large mass around her left temporal lobe. By Wednesday night early Thursday she had an operation to remove a large part of the left side of her skull to relieve the pressure. She was then in a coma for about 9 days and in intensive care for about 3-4 weeks.
Rehab lasted from May 08 to Jan 09
She suffers from loss of short term and long term memory and word finding problems.
We have twin girls (aged 4 years 3 months at the time in 2008) and l had to give up work to look after them and as yet have not been able to get back to work.
There is an ongoing case against the hospital trust for negligence. I therefore do not wish to get into discussions about my wife’s case. I just wanted to let other people know of our experiences.
