My name is Barbara and we live in Ballarat Victoria Australia. My husband Brian 68 contracted what the doctors believe as Viral encephalitis in November 2005.
My husband Brian is in the process of getting better after what I think has been a very frightening illness.
Brian had a chesty cold for 2 days which I also had and we visited the doctor and had antibiotics. After two days he could not sleep and spent his time all night being sick and sleeping in different beds. He said he had a terrible headache and was nauseated. He would not eat anything , but I made him drink fluids and gave him panadol.
After a terrible night he phoned our local doctor and was not able to get into see him until 5 pm. By the time we arrived at the doctors he just fell into the doctors arms. The doctor had an ambulance called and he was taken to hospital and admitted as an emergency patient. Brian had a temperature of 40, severe headaches and did not recognise anything. He remained like this for two days. His blood pressure was elevated, he was sweating with the fever, his whole body was shaking continually but his hands were pale and cold. He tried to get out of bed and had to have someone watching him all the time. Brian has spent 10 days in hospital, had blood tests, cat scans, brain scan, and a lumbar puncture. The lumbar puncture showed abnormal fluid. So we have been told that most likely viral encephalitis. A MRI was not able to be done as the hospitals was being serviced.
We had been in an area Yarrawonga on the Murray River 3 weeks before. The doctor said this ties in with Viral encephalitis from mosquitoes in this area. Brian is still not himself and we have been told it will be a long slow process. He is still very unsteady on his feet and misses his golf which he plays twice a week.
Thanks for your informative letters everyone and good health.
